While traditional countertops are the bulk of our business, we love a challenge.
Below you will find one such project.
The client wanted a Corian Island that appeared to “float.” Doing so generally requires a thicker top for support, but the client wanted a max thickness of 1.5″ with a 6″ reverse knife edge so the edge would essentially disappear
The top also needed to be finished on all sides like a piece of furniture.
Challenge accepted.

1. A 650 pound sheet of 1/2″ thick plate steel was sandwiched in the middle of the island to give it the strength and rigidity needed to create the floating appearance.
3. The final install.
On this project, the SPW Surfaces team collaborated closely with the design team, engineer, and custom builder to create a kitchen island with a unique floating appearance.
After more than a month of meticulous planning and teamwork, the client’s vision was brought to life—despite others saying it couldn’t be done.
2. The island was meticulously sanded to a furniture like finish on both the top and the botttom.
